You Have a New Puppy
Welcoming a puppy into your family can be sheer joy, but there are a few things to know before you bring them home. Talk to a veterinarian at Doerr Animal Clinic in Louisville to learn more.
New puppy, Now What?
It can be overwhelming at first when you bring home a new puppy; the best tip is to start right away setting boundaries and training your pet. Keep him or her on a leash at first, until they have familiarized themselves with the home, and then contain them in an area where there are no puppy hazards. Reward good behavior with treats to begin adjusting your puppy to their new living situation.
Stock-up on What You Need
You are going to need a crate to keep your pet safe when you are not around. Plus, it provides a secure hideout for your puppy when they are anxious. Talk to your vet about the best types of food for your puppy, and make sure to provide them with their own bedding, bowls, and toys. You will need grooming supplies, too, but make sure that you only buy products that are gentle for new puppies.
Get Your Home Ready
Is your home puppy-proof? Crawl around to see things from your pet’s perspective; get rid of overwhelming air fresheners or oil burners that could cause your puppy to cough. Cover up outlets and hide cords- puppies love to chew on these. Keep your clothing and shoes out of the way, too. It is not a bad idea to invest in a few baby-gates until your puppy is acclimated.
Set-Up a Wellness Exam
First things first: make an appointment for a puppy wellness exam with your vet. They will give advice pertaining to the best food, treats, and grooming for your distinct dog. They will also provide a vaccination schedule and talk to you about spaying or neutering your pet.
