Our Louisville Vet Shares About ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
At Doerr Animal Clinic, we take part in the ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Cat celebration. Each June, we encourage our patients who are considering adding a cat to their family to adopt a pet waiting to find their forever home. Learn more about adopting a shelter cat.
What is “Adopt a Shelter Cat” in June?
“Kitten season” kicks off in June, as cats tend to breed more. These kittens wind up in the animal shelter when staff members rescue homeless litters or when pet parents drop off unwanted litters at their local animal shelters. There are many more kittens that enter the shelter system than shelters can care for. Rescue a feline friend and help your local shelter make room for one more cat this June.
If you love cats but can’t take on another family member, donate money or pet supplies to your local animal shelter. It takes a lot of resources to care for all of those kittens, provide medical care, and spay and neuter animals to reduce the overpopulation problem. Every little bit helps.
Why Adopt a Shelter Cat?
Shelters are full of cats and kittens of all colors, sizes, and types who would make great companions. It’s cheaper to adopt a shelter pet than buy a cat from a breeder, and you can feel great about giving a forever home to a homeless pet. The money you spend on a shelter pet pays for the animal’s care and helps the shelter rescue other animals, whereas paying a breeder enriches that person.
It’s a myth that pets are dumped at the animal shelter because they are bad. Most kittens wind up in the shelter system because their owners can’t find adopters, or they were born to feral cats. Cats tend to come into the shelter system when an owner is no longer able to care for them.
