Find Your New Family Member with the Louisville ASPCA's Adopt A Shelter Cat Month
Thinking that it's time to welcome a new pet into your family? It's the ASPCA's Adopt A Shelter Cat Month, and there's never been a better time to bring a new pet into your home. At Doerr Animal Clinic in Louisville, our veterinarian is excited to help you get your new cat off to a great start.
Adoption Tips from Our Veterinarian
As with any addition to a family, there is always an adjustment period. Follow these tips to ease the transition of your new cat joining your family.
- If your cat seems standoffish or nervous at first, don't worry. Think about how much has changed for your new friend! Pick up on your cat's cues when it comes to getting to know him. If he does not want to be picked up or be held quite yet, don't force it. Give him space to warm up to your family in his own time.
- Provide at least one litter box per floor, per cat. Be sure to scoop the litter box at least twice a day. This keeps your cat happy with his bathroom space and ensures he continues to use the box.
- If you have other pets in your home, be sure to supervise their first few months of interactions with your new pet. Animals can become protective of their space and family when a new animal is brought into the mix.
- Even if your cat is strictly an indoor animal, be sure to have him microchipped. Accidents happen, and in the event that your cat gets outside, you want to be sure that he is chipped.
